Our Story

Katy and Jennifer’s friendship began back in the summer of 1996 when Jennifer stumbled into Katy’s work, Chin Chin on Sunset Blvd. Jennifer was jobless, hungry and fresh off the streets of Chicago. Katy was eating a dark chocolate covered fortune cookie when she saw wide-eyed salivating Jennifer gawking from a distance. Katy introduced herself, offered her a fortune cookie, and the rest is history.

Their friendship has been colorful; full of ups, downs, and all kinds of sideways but, they have walked through, by each other’s side, every step of the way. One pivotal moment was witnessing the slow painful demise of Katy’s father, Bobby, as he lost his battle to alcoholism in 2005. This was a devastating loss. Already in the throes of her battle with alcoholism, this loss drove Katy even deeper. On the brink of a second suicide attempt, Katy stumbled into the rooms of Alcoholics Anonymous in 2010.

Jennifer witnessed Katy’s transformation from a front row seat and through attraction found herself in her own 12-Step program in 2015. Through adopting the 12-step framework for living and practicing the principles in their daily lives, Katy and Jennifer fostered a passion for life and service. Their relationships with themselves, their families, and friends transformed into one of meaning and gratitude. But what they couldn’t ignore was the transformation they experienced in their relationship together and with other women. They developed a deep understanding of the value and importance of having a community of women.

Two women, whose story looked bleak, found hope where there was none, fostered accountability where once held blame, replaced self-loathing and obsession with self-care and esteem-able acts, and they began to care less about what they wanted and more about what they could do for others. The impossible became possible; they rewrote their story and made it a good one.

Katy and Jennifer began manifesting their dream of founding a women’s home around 2016. Their vision was to provide a resource for girls, just like them, to have a safe place to come home to, foster authentic relationships with women, develop life skills to properly show up in the world, and discover the value in service as they find their footing in a recovery community and begin to rewrite their own story. Today that dream is a reality.
